SHARING OUR OCEANS

Enabling Co-existence: Integrating Restoration with Operations

SeaGrown champions a collaborative approach, enabling sustainable seaweed cultivation to thrive alongside all marine users – from leisure to tourism to the largest offshore installations fuelling our transition to net zero. We facilitate the seamless integration of environmental restoration with economic activity, offering an exciting and proven nature-positive pathway for industries needing to compensate for their operational footprint.

The Kelpedo™ system is specifically engineered for effective co-location and nature-based compensation. Its tried and tested design features, low surface profile, and robust mooring minimise operational interference. Kelpedos can be deployed within offshore wind farms to enhance biodiversity post-construction, near ports and estuaries to mitigate nutrient loads, or alongside other activities as part of a comprehensive environmental strategy. This compatibility allows us to deliver verifiable environmental benefits – carbon capture, biodiversity uplift, and water quality improvement – directly within your operational footprint.

Proven Performance: Innovation Without Risk

Delivering genuine nature-positive outcomes demands robust evidence. At SeaGrown, our claims are built upon a solid foundation of real-world operational experience gained over years of cultivating seaweed offshore, combined with rigorous, ongoing scientific monitoring. This ensures our methods provide innovation without the risk that can be associated with novel environmental solutions.

Operational Experience

Our operational expertise is hard-won from managing the UK's first large-scale offshore seaweed cultivation site since 2018 in the challenging conditions of the North Sea. Our skilled marine crew are regularly out at sea. They deploy and maintain Kelpedo™, allowing our seaweed to withstand exposed marine conditions at sea year-round.

At our site we regularly see large winter storms with wave heights higher than 10m (five times higher than the average person!). Kelpedo™ survives these storms, where other systems cannot.

This proven track record validates the resilience and reliability of our technology.

Scientific Rigour

Complementing our operational expertise, our dedicated science team conducts comprehensive environmental monitoring. Led by Professor Laura Robinson, we meticulously collect data on key indicators, including water quality, biodiversity metrics, and carbon sequestration. The results provide clear scientific evidence of the positive ecological impact. This combined evidence base provides the verifiable data needed to confidently report on ESG targets and compensatory requirements.
